What it is
Sniff is a treasure-hunting game for the browser. Salchi, a dachshund, searches for treasure buried in the sand. You cannot see it: his nose guides you. Small squares above Salchi light up according to how close he is to the nearest treasure you have not dug up, and the sniffing sounds more often the closer you get. When you are on top of it, dig. An empty hole costs you a moment.
Every level has its tide: the water floods the bottom row first and, every few seconds, the next one up, and a flooded row cannot be walked on. If the tide takes an undug treasure, you lose the level, so start with whatever is lowest. Each world brings its own danger: crabs on the Beach, snakes that lunge when you get close in the Jungle, with burrows to cross the map, and slow mummies that wake when you get close in the Ruins. A hit stuns you briefly.
With a finger or the mouse
With a finger or the mouse: drag to move Salchi with a floating stick that appears where you put your finger down, and give a short tap, without dragging, to dig.
With the keyboard
With the keyboard: arrow keys or W, A, S and D to move and the space bar to dig. Escape or the P key pauses the game.
Levels and stars
There are three worlds of eight levels: Beach, Jungle and Ruins. Each level gives one to three stars: one for digging up every treasure, another for also collecting every bone, and the third for doing it with at most two empty holes and no hits. Your progress is saved on your device.
Difficulty
Each level you clear opens on Hard, where Salchi's sniff reaches less far, and then on Extreme, where one hit ends the attempt. Each difficulty keeps its own stars.
